The Last Supper – History and Parody

The Last Supper was painted by Leonardo da Vinci in a rather short period of about three years; that was from 1495 to 1498 AD. A span of three years is considered to be short because the painting was a masterpiece from the point of view of human expression. It was considered to be a very short time even by da Vinci himself, because he had a habit of procrastinating his work. The painting today is preserved in the dining hall of the Santa Maria delle Grazie Convent in the city of Milan, Italy.

The reason that the painting is a masterpiece is that da Vinci took a snapshot of history itself. The imagination that has been deployed by him is also astounding. This famous painting depicts the scene of the Last Supper, where Jesus Christ announces his prediction, that one of his close followers (the twelve apostles), was going to betray him. The expressions of all the characters in the painting are captured by Leonardo da Vinci in just a fraction of a second after Jesus announces his prediction. The expressions and emotions that appear on the faces of the apostles in just a fraction of a second show surprise, outrage, shock and even fright.

Being such a popular painting it is bound to get a few imitations and parodies. Which is your favorite??

  1. My question is….Who plays Judas in each of them. I think I like the Sapranos one the best.

  2. I love the original, there is so much to see….
If you look closely, near Peter there is an unowned hand, I don’t think it’s Mary Magdalene’s, but I’m not quite sure….
I Love Leonardo Da Vinci’s work… It has a strong message.
    By the way I’m only 13. :)

  3. not to be an ass but that’s not Mary Magdalene … it’s John the Baptist. John the Baptist is portrayed as being feminine. John tends to be depicted more feminine than the others in more paintings. but this painting is Jesus and his twelve disciples. just saying. a lil’ art history never hurt anyone right!? :)

  4. That is definitely Mary Magdalene, it is said by many historians that Jesus Took Mary to be if wife, his “Right Hand” so to speak. Maybe you should brush up on YOUR history.

  5. Fantastic stuff. But you forgot one. I was watching the original M*A*S*H movie last night. When the best equipped dentist in the Army decided to commit suicide they all gathered around for a “last supper”.

  6. You do realise that Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code isn’t a historical document, right?

Honestly, some people will believe anything.

  7. “None of your business,” I really don’t think I need to know how old you are. It is, after all, none of my business. And I’m not impressed, by the way.
I like the happy meal rendition.

  8. The 12 disciples are pictured as follows, left to right:

Bartholomew, James Minor, Andrew, Judas, Peter, John, JESUS, Thomas, James Major, Philip, Matthew, Thaddeus, and Simon

  9. Hahahaha. Who cares if you’re 13?
Yeah, Da Vinci’s work is pretty amazing & can keep people contempulating the meaning. But imagine being in his place, he just made a simple painting, and people are making it into this big thing..?
He probably just made it because someone wanted him to.
And anyways, some of the other parodies are funny, like the Happy Meal one. :p

  10. This is awesome. By the way – our drummer sent me this link my way. We have our own take on The Last Supper which is serving as the artwork on our upcoming album: The Last T.V. Dinner – featuring T.V. icons at the table with The Fonz as Jesus. It’s on our homepage here:

I’d be happy to get you a copy of the artwork to add to your collection if you’d like.

  11. Has anyone bothered to count all the pictures. The only two with the right amount of people is the
sopranos and the sesame street one. maybe they are being disrespectful by adding jesus in

  12. Is everyone forgetting how to be a good Christian. Leonardo da Vinci was a great artist but he also painted Gods work…How dare the other artists have the audacity to try to play down the last supper of Our Lord!!

  13. john the baptist couldn’t of been in the last supper as he had been executed days before this supper even came to be.

  14. an interesting point is made in the davinci code where if u move mary over onto jesus’s left it looks like she is leaning her head on her shoulder, and that there clothes are an exact mirror its a good point and a great movie
    (also 13) :)

  15. another point made in the davinci code (which i know is a fictional movie) is that the mind sees what it wants to see

  16. ik wat u meen but its not like they r makin fun of them they r just giving another view however the other view should be more accurate

  17. actualy its hard to see but the:1,4,5,7,10, and 11 all have the right number of people

  18. sorry to say but your wrong, its not John the Baptist, it is no other than Mary Magdelene. Maybe you should go back to the real history of this painting.

  19. people you think this is a simple painting ?
    it’s a MASTER PIECE,
at the time da vinci lived NO ONE used to paint like this!

  25. i believe it should absolutely be mary magdalene……………..

  26. i think it was terrible and its not somthing to laugh at
…..but i loved the house one lol

  27. Being human Season 4 Episode 8, at the 7:13 mark.
The Old Ones (vampires) have arrived are doing the last supper, though the seem to be lacking a couple people. There is a bearded Judas looking fellow.

  28. take a look on the right… there is also a figure with long blond hair and no facial hair… also a feminine figure. prehaps that’s John the Baptist…

  29. It’s not Mary of Magda, it’s Jesus’ disciple John the Apostle, as John the Baptist was beheaded before this took place, you people need to read the Bible and brush up on your history

  30. It’s not Mary of Magda, it’s Jesus’ disciple John the Apostle, as John the Baptist was beheaded before this took place, you people need to read the Bible and brush up on your history, fools

  31. That is definately Mary Magdalene. I know that most people find out about that after reading The da Vinci Code by Dan Brown which is supposed to be fictional but that fact is actualy correct. There are plenty of historical books that say Mary Magdalene was Jesus’s wife and if we analize the picture you can see the signs which show that the person to the left of Jesus is a woman.
